Take action for Maui’s beautiful coral reefs and beaches
We all want clean ocean water at our favorite Maui beaches. Coral reefs need clean ocean water to survive and thrive.
To achieve clean ocean water, we need to understand where and why there are problems with water quality. That’s why Maui Nui Marine Resource Council is proud to be a co-founder and co-manager of the Hui O Ka Wai Ola ocean water quality monitoring program. This community-based program tests water quality at 39 beach and shoreline locations on Maui every three weeks, monitoring for temperature, pH, salinity, silicate, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, suspended sediment, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, total nitrogen and phosphorus, particulate nitrogen and phosphorus. These metrics measure most of the physical and chemical stressors associated with reef decline.
We monitor 22 sites in West Maui from the Pāpalaua Pali to Honolua and 17 sites in South Maui from Mā’alaea to ‘Āhihi Kīna’u. The data we collect is provided to the Hawaii Department of Health and shared publicly online at HuiOKaWaiOla.com. With data, we can tackle the causes of water pollution by working with upslope landowners and the County.
While our program is volunteer-based, each site requires an expenditure of $6,000 per year to cover testing materials, shipping of water samples to a testing lab, materials and other program-related costs.
Your generous donation will support this work. It will also help in the fight for clean water along Maui’s leeward shores — at beaches that you love, at beaches that are important to your business or community, or beaches that are cherished by friends and family.
We need your support to continue this program. Here’s how you can help:
- Choose the donation level that’s right for you.
- Invite others to donate! We welcome donations from individuals, families, civic groups, homeowner associations and businesses.
- Use social media to encourage your friends and family to donate.
- Donate $3,300 or more and you will be invited to include your logo or name on our Sponsors page on our website and at our monthly “Know Your Ocean” Speaker Series.
