Here are some ways to give to Maui Nui Marine Resource Council that could help you reduce your tax bills and/or possibly afford a larger donation:
Donor advised fund
A donor-advised fund, or DAF, is a philanthropic vehicle established at a public charity. It allows donors to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax benefit and then recommend grants from the fund over time to nonprofits of their choice.
If you have a Donor Advised Fund, simply direct your DAF custodian to include Maui Nui Marine Resource Council as one of your charitable giving selections.
We have a direct link to Schwab Charitable, Fidelity Charitable and BNY Mellon through our DAF Direct link. Click here to donate through your donor advised fund.
Donate publicly traded securities
If you have publicly traded securities that youʻve owned for more than a year that have increased in value, consider funding your donation by giving those securities to Maui Nui Marine Resource Council.
You will conserve cash and capital gains tax is not due on gains from donated securities. Plus, you may receive a charitable deduction equal to the value of the donated securities.
To arrange for a gift of securities to Maui Nui Marine Resource Council, please consult your tax or financial advisor and contact Michael Fogarty, at [email protected].
Employee Matching Gifts
To support employee charitable giving, your employer may offer an “Employee Matching Gift” program that provides matching funds for any donations you make to a nonprofit. If so, please talk with your human resources department to obtain the necessary forms to alert your company about your donations to Maui Nui Marine Resource Council.
Donating to Match Your IRA Withdrawals
Over age 59 1/2 but hesitant to make withdrawals from your traditional IRA due to the added federal income taxes you might incur? Consider withdrawing enough to cover your charitable donations. Tax credits for your charitable donations could cover the extra taxes incurred on your IRA withdrawal.
After Age 70 1/2: Give a Tax-Free Gift Through Your IRA
If you are 70 ½ or older you may be able to enjoy a tax benefit by making a charitable gift to Maui Nui Marine Resource Council directly from your traditional or Roth IRA. You may donate up to $100,00 annually to a charity — free from federal income taxation. Depending on where you live, your donation from your IRA may also be free from state taxation.
Please note that this law does not apply to 401(k)s, 403(b)s and other tax-favored retirement plans. Your gift must be made directly from your IRA.
Please consult your tax advisor for details.
